Dear Friends – October 1, 2014

Dear Friends, It’s time to check in and do a little catching up, or I should say a lot of catching up. I won’t try to cover all the bases, but I want to let you know that things are going fine for me, now. Whew! The first year of retirement was difficult, to say […]

Dear Friends – June 17, 2013

Dear Friends, This is either my last letter as your senior minister, or my first as your Minister Emeritus.

Famous Last Words – June 9, 2013 (audio available)

CLICK HERE to listen to this sermon. Before attempting to utter some ‘famous last words,’ I want to return to some of the first foundational words – I’m referring to my first two sermons from this pulpit – my two candidating sermons, which I titled Being Real, Together and The Companionship of Traveling Souls. The first […]

Dear Friends – June 3, 2013

Dear Friends, The days have dwindled down ‘to a precious few.’ Oh, if only I could find the words to express what I’m feeling, to put into sentences what I’m thinking, to tell you how much you have meant to me, what gifts you have given, how fortunate and grateful I feel.

Dear Friends – May 20, 2013

Dear Friends, Carlyn graduated from Cleveland Institute of Music on Saturday – it was the most moving commencement ceremony I’ve ever experienced, and with two children, two grandchildren and a few of my own, there have been lots of them.

“Mothers – Memory, Myth and Mercy” – May 12, 2013

The following lines from Whitman will lead us into the sermon: “There was a child went forth every day; And the first object he look’d upon, that object he became; And that object became part of him for the day, or a certain part of the day, or for many years, or stretching cycles of […]

Finding God in the Bible – May 5, 2013

When my grandchildren were young my daughter bought them a series of children’s books called Where’s Waldo. It originated in England, actually, where it was called Where’s Wally. But Waldo fit better in the U.S.A. – I presume it’s because friends of Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to him affectionately as Waldo. The books consisted of […]

Dear Friends – May 6, 2013

Dear Friends, An invitation to the June 15 retirement gathering was mailed to Lory and me with a note that said, “You can’t decline.” We smiled, then Lory held it up the way a prosecutor holds up evidence to the jury and said, “This makes it real.”

Dear Friends – April 22, 2013

Dear Friends; Lory and I drove to Cleveland this past weekend for Carlyn’s senior recital at Cleveland Institute of Music. She played Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5, Schumann’s Fantasiestucke and Prokofiev’s Sonata in C Major – and she was wonderful…and we were appropriately proud, and very relieved!

Mentors and Models in Ministry – April 14, 2013

Opening words: Henri Nouwen, Catholic priest and author of 40 books on spirituality… “When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with […]
